I'm still at a loss to understand quite where it all went wrong for Robbie Keane at Anfield. He's a player with proven ability having been there and done that over the past 10 years in the Premier League.
And his arrival at Liverpool in the summer seemed to be the missing link as the Reds bidded to end 19 years of title hurt.
But quite what happened I do not know. Surely players - especially ones which cost such big money - need more than five sorry months to prove themselves? I see quite a lot of Liverpool, and whilst Keane never quite hit the heights he did previously at Spurs, he didn't do badly. And seven goals of a stop-start season doesn't seem like that bad a return to me.
Had Liverpool stuck with him, I'm sure he would have ended the season with around 15 goals - and that's not a bad debut season is it not!!
But the sale of Keane could have grave consequences for Liverpool's fading title chances. Fernando Torres - world-class player that he is - has not had a run of 5 games in succession without injury this season, while you cannot rely on any of Kuyt, Babel and Ngog (who?!!) to get you a goal.
So all in all, the sale of Keane does not benefit anyone, except for maybe the player himself, who was clearly fed up gathering splinters in his backside from lengthy spells sat on the bench.
Rafa might not realise it yet, but in the months to come I think the sale of Keane - and the lack of strike options available to the Reds boss - could come back to bite him on the backside. Never mind Rafa, there's always next year. Next time though, if you're spending £20million on a striker, at least be prepared to give him more than five months to prove himself.
