Reds only have themselves to blame

One look at Liverpool's performances over the last week makes you realise that Rafa Benitez's troops have the ability to be English champions. The 4-0 routing of Real Madrid means once again they are likely to be amongst the Champions League favourites, while the 4-1 win at Old Trafford underlined just how effective they can be on the domestic front too.
But when push comes to shove, Liverpool failed to win all those winnable games - and the disappointing home draws with Stoke, West Ham, Fulham and Everton were very much a case of eight points dropped. If they'd have just picked up four of those points, how much more interesting would the title race be now?....
But whilst the Reds have only themselves to blame, you have to applaud Man United for their ability to dig out results when it counts - and this is what makes champions, and the others, the also-rans.
But you have to also delve deeper and realise that Liverpool's squad just couldn't cope with the lengthy loss of key striker Fernando Torres, who is only now beginning to show his true abilites this season. A fully-fit Torres over the course of the season might have made the world of difference, but when you're calling on the likes of N'gog to replace him, then you're really going to be struggling to sustain a challenge.
That said, the title race is not over and a second-placed finish this term can give Liverpool hope going into next term. One thing Benitez will need to do is strengthen his options up front - and if he can find another world-class striker to play alongside Torres, maybe Liverpool can be celebrating the title in 2010.
