Shooter : All eyes will be on one player in this tussle, Cristiano Ronaldo. But despite having the 'world's best player' in their side, Big Phil's troops are in scrappy form, having gone three games without a win. Turkey lost 3-2 to Uruguay recently and were also held by Belarus, so are there for the taking - expect Portugal to gobble up a narrow win. 2-1

Looter : Big things are expected of 2004 runners-up Portugal and I don't think they'll disappoint in their opening game. The Turks are another side past their best and I think Ronaldo - despite all the speculation surrounding his future - will gobble up a shonky Turkey defence. 2-0

Switzerland vs Czech Republic
Shooter : The Czechs will be missing the creative guile of Rosisky, but should still prove too powerful for the joint hosts of the event. The Swiss lost 4 on the spin before beating Slovakia 2-0 recently, but the Czechs know this is a must-win game in a tough group. 0-2
Prediction : Away Win    Actual Result : Away Win
Looter : The host nation are likely to line-up in a 4-5-1 formation and will be roared on by a passionate home crowd. The Czechs aren't quite the force they once were and have an ageing line-up. Add into the mix that it wouldn't be the first time the opening game of a tournament has resulted in a shock result. 1-0

Austria vs Croatia
Shooter : Austria have gone 5 games without a win, but pushed Holland pretty close in a 4-3 defeat so have goals in them. Croatia are dark horses but showed in a 3-0 loss to the Dutch they are vulnerable at the back. Bilic's troops are dark horses - but I think they'll be frustrated by the fired-up co-hosts in a 1-1 draw.

Looter : The Austrians are far and away the weakest nation to be participating in this summer's football festival and they'll do well to pick up a point from their three games. A match against Slaven Bilic's much-fancied Croats is not an easy start and with Niko Kranjcar pulling the strings, I'd expect the visitors to disappoint the co-hosts. 1-2

Germany vs Poland
Shooter : Both teams are in very good nick heading into Euro 2008, with the Poles having won 4 of their last 6 games and the Germans 3 in 6. The difference is Germany, my tip to win the event, have been banging the goals in (13 in 5 games), with Poland rarely netting more than a goal. 3-1 for me

Looter : The Germans go into the tournament as favourites, and with a wealth of options up front, it's easy to see why. Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski - if he gets on - will relish this opener against the Poles, who are in less than impressive form going into the finals. The Poles might try and play it defensive, but I think their neighbours will win with ease. 2-0

Holland vs Italy
Shooter : These two footballing juggernauts meet head on in the toughest group, and I reckon both will be happy with a draw. Both have won 5 of their last 6 games - but Holland have won 3 on the trot, with Italy winning 5 before losing 1-0 to Spain last time out. I reckon a 1-1 draw.

Looter : Arguably the tie of the group stages, the loser in this one will face an uphill battle to qualify for the quarter-finals. Holland go into the match in pretty tidy nick, with Robben, van Nistelrooy and Sneijder all looking in top form. Italy, on the other hand, have been robbed of Fabio Cannavaro's defensive calming influence and I think his absence will really be felt. 2-1

Romania vs France
Shooter : If you're looking for a potential shock, here it is. France are notoriously slow starters in big events, and Romania come into this game having knocked 3 past Russia and six past Albania recently. Les Bleus have won 3, drawn 2 and lost 1 of their last 6 games against average opponents so are hardly red-hot. I fancy Romania to win 2-1.

Looter : The so-called 'Group of Death' gets underway with a clash many believe France must win to stand a chance of progressing. But Romania aren't as weak as many will see and they have players who can match the French in the skills stakes. France surpassed all expectations by reaching the World Cup finals two years ago, but I think this tournament could see them fall embarrassingly short - and they may start with a disappointing draw. 0-0

Spain vs Russia
Shooter : Once again Spain come into this tournament with a glittering squad, having won 5 of their last 6 games (three 1-0 wins on the spin), so have great expectations of them. They always start strongly and tend to fade away, and while Russia are no mugs (4 wins, 2 defeats in last 6 games) I think the Spaniards will triumph 2-0.

Looter : Spain go into the tournament with the tag as second favourites and will be hoping to shake off the 'must-do-better' tag at long last. In Torres, Villa and Co they have the firepower to sink any defence, but Russia proved in qualifying that they're a match for anyone and in Guus Hiddink have a coach with more tactical nouse than Spain counterpart Luis Aragones. It's a tough one to call, so I'm going to opt for a score draw, 2-2.

Greece vs Sweden
Shooter : The defending European champions look a well-drilled outfit once again, but have stuttered recently, losing to Hungary and drawing with Armenia. They'd won 4 on the trot before that, though, and I think Sweden will finish bottom of this group as they really struggle to find the net (4 goals in last 6 games). 1-0 to the Greeks.
Prediction : Home Win    Actual Result : Away Win
Looter : Greece caused one of the biggest sporting upsets of all time by winning the European Championships last time out and may will expect them to fall flat on their faces this time around. But they're nowhere near as weak as many pundits are making out and are more than capable of getting their title defence off to a winning start against a Sweden side that will rely on their strikeforce of Ibrahimovic and Larsson. 1-0

Czech Republic vs Portugal
Shooter : It's hard to judge this one as both will have already played a game - but if my tips come off, they'll both have registered opening wins so may be happy with a point as they'll both expect to win their other game in the group. Plenty of talent on show so I'll go for 2-2.
Prediction : Draw    Actual Result : Away Win
Looter : As documented, the Czechs are no longer the force in world football they once were and could need a victory in this one to keep their progress hopes alive. Much will depend on the form of Milan Baros, but he couldn't find the net during a barren loan spell at Portsmouth and I doubt he'll get much joy out of the excellent Ricardo Carvalho. A clean sheet therefore gives the Portuguese a great chance and I think they'll score a couple on their way to a comfortable win. 0-2

Switzerland vs Turkey
Shooter : Normally being the host is a huge advantage, and I think a vociferous Swiss support will roar their team on to victory against the Turks. It won't be a footballing spectacle but this is their most realistic chance of bagging three points - I think they'll take it. 2-1

Looter : Both nations will see this fixture as their best chance of a victory and both will know three points here will hand them a great chance of reaching the next stage. The big man up front Frei looks a real handful for Switzerland and I can see him getting on the scoresheet in a victory for the co-hosts. 1-0
