Archived tips :
Falkirk vs Rangers
Shooter : Falkirk finished in a solid mid-table position in last season's SPL, and were no mugs at home as they won 8, drew 6 and lost 5. Rangers are reeling from their failure to reach the Champions League and their away form is pretty terrible. A brave draw for the Bairns. 1-1
Prediction : Draw Actual Result : Away Win
Looter : Gers hit 12 goals past the Bairns in their three fixtures last term and will have a huge point to prove after their midweek disaster in the Champions League. I think Walter Smith will have his troops really pumped up for this one and I'd back them to ease to a win, possibly by an impressive 0-4.
Prediction : Away Win Actual Result : Away Win
Birmingham City vs Sheff Utd
Shooter : The Championship has thrived on being arguably the tightest division in Britain in recent seasons - but I'm afraid Blues will run away with the title this season. They've added the prolific Kevin Phillips to a very strong squad, and although the Blades will cut it over the season, I think McLeish will outwit Blackwell here. 2-0
Prediction : Home Win Actual Result : Home Win
Looter : A real clash of the titans at St Andrews with two sides both expecting to be in the promotion shake-up come May. Both sides boast real threat up front with Messrs Phillips, Beattie, Bent and McFadden all hoping to prove that their better days are not behind them. I can see an entertaining draw, possibly 2-2, in this one.
Prediction : Draw Actual Result : Home Win
Charlton vs Swansea
Shooter : Martinez's Swans glided gracefully to the League One title last season, scoring 82 goals on the way, and have kept hold of their star men like Bodde, which is key. Cash-strapped Charlton are having to sell their prize assets so Pardew faces a tough test, which won't be helped by an opening defeat on home turf. 1-2
Prediction : Away Win Actual Result : Home Win
Looter : All is not well in the Addicks camp and anything less than three points straight away will see all the immediate pressure piled on Alan Pardew. Swansea will want to ensure a good start to life in the Championship and will be hard to beat this term, so I think a score draw is the safe option. 2-2
Prediction : Draw Actual Result : Home Win
Celtic vs St Mirren
Shooter : St Mirren finished third from bottom in the SPL table and lost 9 on the road last season, so it's doubtful they drop the Bhoys at Parkhead. Strachan's cock-a-Hoops will be keen to pile the misery on Rangers with a big opening-day win, so expect goals. 3-0
Prediction : Home Win Actual Result : Home Win
Looter : Anything other than a home win in this one would be a major shock, but I don't think it will be quite as comprehensive as many will expect. The same fixture ended in a 1-1 draw last term and although the Buddies will take heart from that, I fear they could well get sunk this time around. 2-0
Prediction : Home Win Actual Result : Home Win
Man Utd vs Portsmouth
Shooter : Sir Alex will not have forgotten that Pompey stopped him from bagging another Treble last season following their FA Cup win at Old Trafford. Harry has spent well since lifting the cup, combining Crouch with Defoe up front. Add that to Pompey's solid defence, and I think a Ronaldo-less United will be held over 90mins. 1-1
Prediction : Draw Actual Result : Draw
Looter : These two met in Nigeria just a fortnight ago and United were comfortable 2-1 victors that day. Pompey will battle hard, though, and can take comfort from United's relatively poor record in the Community Shield by their own high standards (with 6 wins from 11 games played under Sir Alex). Crouch and Defoe will be a handful and with Rooney missing out, I'm going for a shock Pompey triumph. 1-2
Prediction : Away Win Actual Result : Draw
Crystal Palace vs Watford
Shooter : Oh dear, the Hornets are very quickly losing their sting. They finished 6th last season but have since sold star men Henderson and Shittu and could seriously struggle to make mid-table. The Eagles, meanwhile, are set to soar under Warnock and could be right in the automatic promotion mix after a flying start. 3-0 for me
Prediction : Home Win Actual Result : Draw
Looter : Watford's form in the second half of last term was equally as bad as those who eventually plummeted into League One, so they'll be keen to put all that behind them. But their defence has been shorn of prize asset Dan Shittu, while their attack is without Darius Henderson and I think Palace will have no worries picking them apart. 2-0
Prediction : Home Win Actual Result : Draw
Cardiff vs Southampton
Shooter : Saints seemingly have a manager in charge who had some vague success with Ajax, and although I think the board have been getting high on expectations, there'll be a nasty come-down for them at Cardiff. City always start strongly and tend to fade away, so I reckon they'll bank three points despite Saints' good pre-season form. 2-1
Prediction : Home Win Actual Result : Home Win
Looter : The Bluebirds were beaten FA Cup finalists last term but all the focus this term will be on promotion, so a good start is essential. Cardiff have added the powerful Jay Bothroyd to their ranks and I think he'll prove the difference against a Southampton side who will finish mid-table at absolute best this term. 2-0
Prediction : Home Win Actual Result : Home Win
Derby vs Doncaster
Shooter : The Rams were the laughing stock of English football last season, but Jewell has pretty much recruited a brand-new starting XI who won't be scarred from their top-flight tits up. Ellington could actually fire them to promotion if he clicks, and although Donny will pack some punch in this division, they'll be floored at Pride Park. 3-1.
Prediction : Home Win Actual Result : Away Win
Looter : As with Forest-Reading, these two sides were miles apart last term. But it will be a different Derby that ended last season as the worst Prem side ever and I think this one will end in a draw - thanks in part to bulky Rovers forward Jason Price. 1-1
Prediction : Draw Actual Result : Away Win
Nottm Forest vs Reading
Shooter : Here's a promoted League One club versus a relegated Premier League club, so you naturally sway towards the Royals. Be warned, though, as all is not well at The Madejski, where most of the big guns want to jump ship for a Prem return. Forest are on the up, and will have enough momentum to register their first three points. 2-1
Prediction : Home Win Actual Result : Draw
Looter : There were two divisions separating these two just three months ago, but that will all count for nothing at the weekend. If you look back to last season's form, Forest finished on a high, while the Royals looked woefully short on goals. I don't think much will change there, and I believe the Reds might just pinch the points in front of their home supporters. 1-0
Prediction : Home Win Actual Result : Draw
Sheff Weds vs Burnley
Shooter : Wednesday were embroiled in a survival scrap for most of last season but only seven points separated these two come the final day and neither of them have done much in the market this summer. The Clarets won more games away from Turf Moor last season (9 to 7 at home) so will be a tough nut to crack...a score draw for me. 2-2
Prediction : Draw Actual Result : Home Win
Looter : First matches of the season are always tough to call, especially when you have two sides who are likely to be mid-table rivals this term. But if you look at the pre-season form, Wednesday have been coasting to wins so I'll have to nudge towards a narrow win for the Owls. 2-1
